Data Security

Good evening, folks! This is Brenda Smith reporting live from Reno, Nevada, where we’re talking about a topic crucial to every business in today’s digital world: data security. Joining us tonight is Scott Morris, IT specialist extraordinaire with Reno Computer Services.

Cybersecurity

Scott, thanks for being here. We hear so much about cyberattacks these days, it can be overwhelming. How do small businesses in our area ensure their data stays safe?

“Brenda, you’re absolutely right. Cybersecurity threats are constantly evolving, and unfortunately, small businesses are often prime targets. Ordinarily, they may not have the same robust security measures as larger corporations.”

Data Backup and Disaster Recovery Solution

So, what steps can they take? What are some practical solutions?” I remember working with a local bakery once whose entire customer database was lost due to a hard drive failure. They almost had to close their doors! It was heartbreaking.

“That’s a great example, Brenda. A reliable data backup and disaster recovery solution is absolutely essential. Consequently, this means regularly backing up all important data and having a plan in place to restore it quickly in case of an incident. Think of it like insurance for your business – you hope you never need it, but if something happens, you’ll be glad you have it.”

Data Security

And what about the actual security measures? What should businesses be doing to protect their data from hackers?

“There are a number of things. Strong passwords are a must – and I mean strong, not ‘password123’. Moreover, multi-factor authentication adds an extra layer of protection. Businesses should also invest in anti-virus and anti-malware software, and keep all their systems and software up to date. Remember that even seemingly small vulnerabilities can be exploited by attackers.”

I once had a client who thought they were safe because they only used free antivirus software. Unfortunately, it wasn’t strong enough to protect them from a phishing attack, which resulted in sensitive customer data being compromised. Notwithstanding that, a good security posture involves a combination of technologies and practices.”

“According to a recent report by the Ponemon Institute, 60% of small businesses that experience a data breach go out of business within six months.” That’s a sobering statistic, Scott.

“It really is, Brenda. Data security isn’t just an IT issue; it’s a business issue. A single data breach can have devastating consequences for any organization.”
